Panther Runners Head To Kenosha For Midwest Collegiate Open

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's cross country teams return to action after a two-week hiatus to compete at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Midwest Collegiate Open, Saturday, in Kenosha, Wis. The Parkside National Cross Country Course will be the site of the 2004 Horizon League Championships.

About the Midwest Collegiate Open

In upwards of 30 teams from every level of intercollegiate competition are expected to compete at the Midwest Collegiate Open. Among the other teams are Division I local rivals, Marquette and UW-Green Bay. Joining UWM and UW-Parkside from the state school system will be UW-Oshkosh, UW-Eau Claire and UW-LaCrosse.

Returning To Kenosha

The Panthers have not competed at UW-Parkside since this same event in 2001. UWM's men placed runners in the top two positions to take second among Division I schools, while the women ran to a sixth-place finish.

Last Time Out: The UIC Invitational
Women:
Freshmen Angie Huebner and Holly Nearmann finished 1-2 to lead the Panther women to a three-team sweep of the UIC Invitational. Junior Griffin McNulty took fourth to round out the Milwaukee runners in the top five. UWM picked up wins over Chicago State (15-50), the University of Chicago (28-29) and the host UIC Flames (20-38) in the dual-meet scored event.

Men: Sophomore Justin Gorman shaved a minute off his time from the year before to take fourth at the UIC Invitational and lead the Panthers to a 2-2 record at the event. Fellow sophomore Elliot Enright also placed in the top-10 for UWM, taking ninth. Milwaukee swept St. Xavier and Chicago State (15-50), but was topped by the University of Chicago (19-36) and UIC (27-28).

Quick Study

Running in their first collegiate race, the freshman duo of Angie Huebner and Holly Nearmann finished 1-2 in leading the Panthers to three victories at the UIC Invitational, Sept. 4. On the short two-mile course, Huebner paced the field with a time of 11:42, just four seconds ahead of Nearmann, and 13 seconds ahead of third place. For her efforts, Huebner was named the Horizon League Female Runner of the Week on Sept. 6.

Parkside on the Horizon

This week's competition will take place at the Parkside National Cross Country Course, the host venue for the 2005 league championships. Times are 11 a.m. for the women's race, while the men run at noon. The last time UWM played host to the conference championships was 1995 when it was run in Glendale, Wis.

Up Next

Next week the Panthers head to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Griak Invitational is the first national meet of the season for the UWM squads.
