MILWAUKEE, Wis. - One week removed from the start of the 2005 season, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's cross country teams return to action Friday (Sept. 9) at the Bradley Invitational in Peoria, Ill. The men's race gets underway at 5:30 p.m., while the women follow suit at 6:15 p.m. Last time out: Milwaukee kicked off its season at the UIC Home Opener last weekend, with the men posting a 2-2 record and women going 1-2 in the event's dual-meet scoring format. Both Panther squads topped Chicago State, but fell to UW-Green Bay and UIC. The UWM men also defeated St. Xavier. Clean Sweep: Senior Josh Nygren and freshman Megan Johnson led the Panthers individually, giving Milwaukee a sweep of the men's and women's races. Nygren paced the men with a course-record time, while Johnson won in just her first collegiate race. Good First Impression: Freshman Megan Johnson took first place at the first collegiate race of her career, but what's more impressive is that the same thing happened in 2004. Sophomore Angie Huebner, as a freshman, won the UIC Home Opener last year in her collegiate debut. For good measure, sophomore Holly Nearman took second place in 2004. Coming Together: UWM did not run a full team last week at the UIC Home Opener, instead running mostly freshman and middle distance runners on the shorter course lengths of two miles for the women and 4.1 miles for the men. At the Bradley Invitational, a number of Panthers expect to make their 2005 debut on a standard course, including all-league seniors Anna Christian and Nate Weiland. Up Next: The Panthers get their first taste of national competition, competing at the Roy Griak Invitational, Sept. 24, in Minneapolis, Minn. The Griak Invitational annually draws some of the top teams in the nation, and is split up into several races.
