Panthers Finish Strong At Great Lakes Regionals

Women 20th, Men 21st in season's final race

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's cross country teams finished their seasons Saturday at the Great Lakes Regional Championships in West Lafayette, Ind., with the women's team finishing 20th out of 31 teams and the men's team finishing 21st out of 31 teams.

Katie Anderson was the top finisher on the women's side, finshing 94th in 23:23.8. She was followed shortly by Alison Shattuck's 101st-place finish in 23:29.2, and Abby Hurst's 117th-place finish with a time of 23:50.4. Anna Christian was the fourth finisher, coming in 146th with a time of 24:28.5, while Michelle Blomquist was the fifth finisher, placing 168th in 24:56.6.

For the men's race, Josh Nygren was the top finisher, placing 89th with a time 32:54.1. The 89th-place finish is tied for the 16th-best finish in school history at the Great Lakes Championships. He was followed by Micha Hanthorn in 122nd place with a time of 33:32.4. Andy Kivioja was the third finisher, placing 126th in 33:38.3, while Steve Saul was the fourth finisher in an off-day. Saul finished 147th in 33:58.7, and was followed by Bryan Hassemer, who placed 155th in 34:12.1.

"We had some good runs on both sides today," head coach Pete Corfeld said. "We finished higher than Youngstown State and Wright State on the women's side, something we didn't do at the league championships, so that was a good step. The fact that we had a freshman as the top finisher on each side says great things about the future of our program."

 

 

The Panthers have completed their 2002 cross country season. The runners' attention now heads to the indoor track season, which will begin Jan. 18, 2003, at the Carthage Invitational in Kenosha, Wis.
