Panther Women Take Third At League Championships

Christian garners first-team honors for second-straight year

KENOSHA, Wis. - Senior Anna Christian took fifth place to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to a third-place finish at the Horizon League Championships Saturday morning in Kenosha. The Panthers hosted the meet and finished with 84 points behind repeat champions, Butler (23 points), and second-place Loyola (60).

Christian claimed first-team all-league honors for the second consecutive year, posting a time of 18:39 to improve by one position over last year's sixth-place finish. Freshman Holly Nearmann was the second Panther finisher, crossing the line in 16th place with a time of 19:44, and just missing out on all-league consideration.

Sophomore Tenia Fisher and juniors Katie Anderson and Griffin McNulty finished between 18th and 24th places to round out scoring for Milwaukee. Fisher led the way, just three seconds back of Nearmann at 19:47 in 18th place. Anderson finished in 19:51 for a 21st-place finish and McNulty was 24th in 20:06.

The Bulldogs won the meet for the third-straight year, putting all five scorers among the top eight finishers, giving them just 23 points. Loyola and UWM repeated their finishes from last year with 60 and 84 points, respectively. Youngstown State finished 18 points back in fourth (102 points), while Detroit (132), UIC (178), Wright State (182) and UW-Green Bay (200) completed the team scoring. Cleveland State competed with three runners, but could not figure in the scoring.

Giving the Panthers depth was senior Christine Wampach and sophomore Kourtney Nault, who each finished among the top-30, just missing scoring opportunities. The pair finished together, with Wampach taking 28th in 20:16 and Nault just one second back at 20:17 and 29th place.

 

 

Milwaukee next competes at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 13, in Terre Haute, Ind. The Great Lakes region is arguably the strongest region in the nation and UWM will be competing for a spot a the NCAA Championships.
