Milwaukee Takes 12th At Lakefront Invitational
CHICAGO, Ill. (Sept. 27, 2008) - Junior Abbie Zaspel finished 28th to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's cross country team to a 12th-place finish at the 36th Annual Lakefront Invitational, hosted by Loyola Saturday afternoon. The Panthers finished with three runners in the top 60 of the 330-runner race and finished with 318 for 12th among the 32 teams. The host Ramblers were the only other Horizon League school in the field, taking fifth. "Both the men's and women's team continue to make progress," head coach Pete Corfeld said. "Both teams showed aggressiveness from the start. For most of our runners, this is the biggest field of competitors that they have ever run against (330 women and 371 men). For the teams to be in the upper half of the field is significant." Zaspel has been the top UWM finisher at each of the three meets this season, this time completing the course in a season-best 18:48. Senior Erin Magargee was once again the team's second finisher, taking 47th in 19:13. Senior Elizabeth Brothen also finished among the top 60, taking 60th with a time of 19:28. Sophomore Taniya Fisher and junior Laura Ring rounded out the team scorers in 79th and 118th place. Fisher crossed the line in 19:41, while Ring ran a time of 20:16. Milwaukee's top seven was completed by freshmen Kristi Schuette and Shannon Brown. Schuette placed 174th in 21:04 and Brown was eight seconds back (21:12) in 180th. The Panthers have three weeks off before returning to action at the Bradley Invitational Oct. 17 in Peoria, Ill.
