KENOSHA, Wis. - Senior Anna Christian placed seventh to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the Midwest Collegiate Open, Saturday afternoon in Kenosha. The meet featured 20 teams, including four Division I schools, and 138 scored runners. An all-league first-team performer last year, Christian kicked off her 2004 campaign crossing the line in 18:33. Freshmen Holly Nearmann and Angie Huebner finished behind her for the Panthers, in 18th and 22nd places, respectively. The frosh duo posted times of 19:10 and 19:17 after taking the top two spots at the UIC Home Opener on Sept. 4 in their first collegiate race. Huebner earned league runner of the week honors after taking first. Rounding out the scoring runners for the Panthers was senior Christine Wampach and junior Katie Anderson. Wampach took 28th with a time of 19:29, with Anderson finishing 40th in 19:57. Sophomore Tenia Fisher took 48th in 20:06 to finish just outside the scoring for Milwaukee, as junior Griffin McNulty took 55th in 20:21. Edinboro took top honors overall, while Horizon League foe Loyola was first among Division I schools. UWM took second among D1, while UW-Green Bay took 11th and Chicago State was 19th on the course that will host the 2004 Horizon League Cross Country Championships on Oct. 30. Milwaukee returns to action Saturday, Sept. 25, at the University of Minnesota's Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis.
