Nearman paces Panthers in fifth place

VALPARAISO, Ind. (Sept. 7, 2007) - Senior Holly Nearman placed fifth to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's cross country team to a third-place finish at the Valparaiso Invitational, Friday evening in Valparaiso, Ind.

The Panthers were third in the eight-team field, beating out four other league foes. Notre Dame took first with 38 points and was followed by Western Michigan in second with 54 and UWM in third with 83. Host Valpo took fourth with 125 points, while Wright State was sixth with 152, Green Bay was seventh with 164 and Cleveland State rounded out the league contenders in eighth with 197.

Nearman ran a time of 19:23 for fifth place, while Valpo's Laura Rolf won the race in 17:51. Junior Erin Magargee finished 12th in 20:10 and sophomore newcomer Abbie Zaspel was 14th in 20:15. Junior Liz Brothen and freshman Hannah Willis also scored for Milwaukee. Brothen took 26th with a time of 21:12 and Willis crossed the line in 21:24 for 31st.

UWM's top seven was filled out by freshman Kristi Wasserburger in 38th (21:45) and freshman Tanaiya Fisher in 43rd (21:58).

Milwaukee has three weeks off before competing at the Roy Griak Invitational, Sept. 29, in Minneapolis.
