Panthers Take Fourth At DePaul Open
CHICAGO, Ill. (Aug. 29, 2008) - Junior Abbie Zaspel placed eighth to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the DePaul Open Friday evening. The Panthers tallied 94 points, trailing Loyola with 28 points, Northwestern with 50 points and DePaul 67. UWM finished ahead of league foes UIC in fifth (140 points) and Green Bay (143). Chicago State rounded out the field with 223 points. "Both of our teams (men's and women's) showed me some potential today and I'm happy about that," Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld said. "Both teams were packed up really close and finished in the middle, but closer to the top half than the bottom. For a season-opener I was happy with where we're at." Zaspel ran a time of 15:10.35 on the 4000m course for eighth place. Senior Erin Magargee was 16th in the race, crossing the line in 15:38.47, while freshman Stephanie Walker completed the top-20 in 15:49.55. Senior Elizabeth Brothen was right behind Walker in 21st with a time of 15:49.82, while senior Danielle Magargee was the final Panther scorer in 30th place, finishing in 16:09.05. Milwaukee's top-seven was filled out by freshman Kristine Schuette and junior Laura Ring. Schuette placed 39th in 16:48.35 and Ring ran 17:06.98 for 43rd. The Panthers have two weeks off before returning to action at the Huskie Invitational, hosted by Northern Illinois on Sept. 13.
