Three Panthers Earn Spots On Academic All-League Squad

Peters, Felsing, Sueppel all honored

Dec. 12, 2008

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's volleyball team has landed three players on the Horizon League's Academic All-League Team, the league office announced today.

Senior Becky Peters, junior Lauren Felsing and sophomore Maddie Sueppel have all been honored for their academic and athletic excellence.

The trio of players also earned All-Horizon League honors for their performance on the court during the season in leading the Panthers to both the regular season and league tournament titles.

Felsing had already claimed ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors after winning U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week recognition three times this season. On the court, she earned Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week honors three times in addition to her recent places on the all-league and league all-tournament teams. She set a new single-season UWM digs record Nov. 8 in the match with Youngstown State and finished the year with 645. She has now reached double figures in digs in 57-straight contests and she has 1,357 career digs, putting her third on UWM's all-time list. Felsing has a 3.982 grade-point average as a marketing major.

Peters did her part as the lone senior on UWM's roster. She finished her career as both UWM's and the Horizon League's all-time digs leader and wound up tied for second on UWM's all-time matches-played list (120). Her dig total wound up at 1,875 and she reached double figures in digs in 109 of her 120 career matches. This season, Peters reached double figures in kills 26 times while recording 21 double-doubles. She also captured scholar-athlete of the week honors earlier this season and has a 3.435 grade-point average as a nursing major.

Sueppel had a major impact on the Panthers' offense and defense during the 2008 season. She was named the most valuable player at the Horizon League Tournament in addition to her place on the all-league team. Sueppel reached double figures in kills in seven of her last nine matches while hitting .375 or better five times. In all, she was in double figures in kills in 12 of 16 league contests and in 21 matches overall. She also finished second on the team in blocks. Sueppel has a 3.678 grade-point average as a business major.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal academic all-league teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for academic all-league consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
