Felsing Earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Honors
Nov. 24, 2008
MILWAUKEE - Junior Lauren Felsing of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's volleyball team has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Felsing carries a 3.982 cumulative grade-point average as a marketing major and claimed a spot on the second team after winning ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors earlier this month. On the floor, Felsing has helped the Panthers to both the Horizon League regular season and tournament titles this season while earning all-league honors and all-tournament recognition. Felsing is the second UWM volleyball player to win Academic All-America honors, joining Cheryl Hegemann, who was named to the third team in 2006. "Lauren has such a strong focus in every aspect of her life. Every day she comes to practice and gives 100 percent, and she does the same thing in the classroom," UWM head coach Susie Johnson said. "She encompasses everything you want in a student-athlete and in a player. She has really developed into a leader for our young group on and off the court. She's just a great kid." Felsing has reached double figures in digs 56-straight times, the second-longest streak in the nation. She ranks third in the league and in the top 25 nationally in digs. She is the first Panther to collect more than 600 digs in a season and she ranks fourth on UWM's all-time digs list. The junior libero is a two-time winner of U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors while she also won scholar-athlete of the month recognition in September. Plus, she earned the athletic director's award this past spring for having the highest grade-point average in the UWM athletics department.
Felsing and the Panthers are awaiting word on where they will go for NCAA Tournament action. UWM has an automatic berth in the tournament thanks to its league tournament title. The pairings will be announced Sunday night. |
