Panthers Hold Top Seed As League Tournament Bracket Is Set
Nov. 16, 2008
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's volleyball team has earned the top seed for this weekend's Horizon League Tournament in Cleveland and the Panthers will open play Friday morning in the quarterfinals. UWM will face either eighth-seeded UIC or ninth-seeded Youngstown State in the first quarterfinal match, which will begin at 11:30 a.m. EST/10:30 a.m. CST in Cleveland State's Woodling Gymnasium. Should the Panthers (20-8) win that match, they would play in a semifinal contest Saturday against either fourth-seeded Loyola or fifth-seeded Butler at 12:30 p.m. EST/11:30 a.m. CST. The championship match is set for noon EST/11 a.m. CST Sunday. Milwaukee earned the top seed by clinching its sixth-straight outright regular season league title. The Panthers secured the crown with a pair of wins in Chicago this past weekend, as UWM swept UIC Friday before claiming a thrilling five-set win at Loyola Saturday. This is the eighth time the Panthers have been the top seed for the league tournament, while UWM has claimed four tournament titles and two second-place finishes. The tournament will get underway Thursday when Youngstown State and UIC meet in a first-round match. Other quarterfinals Friday include the Loyola/Butler match, second-seed Valparaiso facing seventh-seed Green Bay and third-seed Wright State squaring off with host and sixth-seed Cleveland State. The winner of the league tournament receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Cleveland State is the defending champion.
