Panthers Earn AVCA Team Academic Award
July 30, 2008
MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's volleyball team has received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award, the organization announced today. The Panthers are one of 70 Division I women's teams to capture the honor, which is awarded to teams that maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average. The cumulative GPA for the Milwaukee volleyball team is 3.411. "I am very proud of our team," UWM head coach Susie Johnson said. "When we are recruiting, we talk to potential players about academics first because that is really why they are here. We talk about the expectations we have for them and achieving high grades is one of those expectations. I am very excited we received this award to recognize the hard work our team is doing in the classroom." UWM's success in school extends throughout its roster. Twelve players on last year's team finished the school year with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better, with seven of those players posting better than a 3.5 GPA. Following the 2007 season, Leanne Felsing earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Region recognition while Leanne and her sister, Lauren, each earned Horizon League All-Academic honors.
