Berg Joins UWM Volleyball Program
Jan. 22, 2008
MILWAUKEE - Jena Berg of Bristol, Wis., has transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from the University of Tennessee and will join the women's volleyball team, head coach Susie Johnson announced today. Berg played two seasons for the Volunteers after being named the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Female Athlete of the Year following her senior year of high school. The 5-foot-10 Berg played in 29 of 30 matches as a freshman at Tennessee, appearing primarily as a defensive and serving specialist before eventually seeing time at setter. Then, during this past season, she played in 28 of Tennessee's 29 matches as the team's primary setter, collecting over 1,000 assists. While a prep standout at Westosha Central High School, Berg helped her team to a pair of state titles and was a three-time all-state performer. Following her senior season, she was ranked as the 33rd-best senior in the country by PrepVolleyball.com. "It is great to have Jena return close to home and join our program," Johnson said. "She is a tremendous all-around player who can play at a very high level at every position on the floor. She has the ability to make our team and program better and should play a big part in helping us continue our success." Berg did not receive a release from Tennessee, meaning she will have to sit out of competition during the 2008 season but then will have two years of eligibility remaining. She is able to begin practicing with the Panthers this spring. Berg is the sister of UWM assistant coach Evan Berg.
