MILWAUKEE - Eric Wheeler of Monroe, Wis., and Kristine Gasser of Mukwonago, Wis., have signed National Letters of Intent to enroll at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and compete for the Panther Track and Field teams, head coach Pete Corfeld announced today.

Wheeler, a hurdler, was a state qualifier in the 110m hurdles last spring, finishing sixth in his preliminary heat with a time of 15.51. Wheeler's best time in that event was 14.5, set during the sectional meet. He also finished the 300m hurdles in 39.6 at the regional championships.

Gasser, a distance specialist, finished 27th at this fall's Wisconsin Division I cross country championships, finishing that meet in 15:20. As a sophomore, she placed 46th at the state cross country meet, finishing in 15:38. She also excels in track, running the 800m as a sophomore in 12th place with a time of 2:25.31. She was also a member of Mukwonago's 4x800m relay team that has qualified for the state championships in each of the past three years.

"As young as both the men's track team and the women's cross country teams are, both Eric and Kristine should help out immediately," head coach Pete Corfeld said. "We're short on men's hurdlers, so Eric should help out trememdously. Kristine's a proven middle-distance runner, and we're really looking forward to working with her."

The Panthers open their season Jan. 18 at the Carthage Invitaitonal in Kenosha, Wis. UWM will host the 2003 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Klotsche Center on March 1 and 2, 2003.
