Eight Track Athletes Named Academic All-LeagueJune 23, 2003 MILWAUKEE - Eight UWM track and field athletes have been named to the Academic All-League team, the league office announced late last week. Five members of the men's team and three women's team members received the honor. For the men's team, juniors Nick Viall, Adam Hobler and Nick Davis, and sophomores Bryan Hassemer and Nick Bruskewitz were honored, while the women's team saw seniors Nicole Frey, Stephanie Kenesie and Abby Hurst earn the award. Davis, a kinesiology major, claimed two of the three league championships for the Panther men at the league's outdoor championships, winning high jump and the javelin. He also scored a spot on the league's second team, finishing second in the triple jump. Davis also placed third in the long jump. Viall (business) and Bruskewitz (graphics design) made the league's second team at the outdoor championships as part of the 4x400m relay team that finished in 3:17.63. Viall also finished sixth in the 400m in 50.62, while Bruskewitz was fifth in the 800m in 1:56.35. Hobler (finance) also made second team all-league by placing second in the 400m, finishing in 48.71. Hassemer, an architecutre major, finished eighth in the 10,000m at the league championships. Davis and Hobler were named to the academic team for the second-consecutive year. Frey, a finance and marketing major, won the 200m and was second in the 100m at the league championships, and also was a member of the league champion 4x100m relay team. Kenesie finished third in the high jump and second in the triple jump, while winning the league's long jump title for the second straight year. Kenesie, who majors in secondary education and math, also finished third in the javelin. Hurst, a biology major, made the league's second team by finishing second in the 5000m run. She also added a fourth-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase. All three made their second appearance on the league team, with Frey and Hurst being named last year and Kenesie being honored in 2001.
To qualify for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 GPA, have completed at least three semesters of school and be a starter or significant contributor to the team.
