UWM Track & Field Sends Four To Mideast RegionalMay 24, 2005 MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Four members of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's track and field teams will head to the NCAA Mideast Regional to represent the Panthers this weekend (May 27-28) in Bloomington, Ind. Sophomore Timeka Walker will represent the UWM women in the 100m and 200m, while junior Nick Wichert in the hammer throw and sophomores Nick Gretz in the shot put and discus and Jeremy Majors in the 800m will represent the men. Walker earned an automatic berth in both events as the Horizon League Champion. The Milwaukee native set a league and school record in the 200m and tied the league mark in the 100m to win both events at the league meet May 13-14. Preliminaries for both the 100m and 200m are scheduled for Friday, with the finals on Saturday. Wichert was the first Panther to qualify for the regional meet, eclipsing the qualifying hammer throw standard for the first time at the Purdue Invitational April 2, while breaking his own school record in the process. Like Walker, Wichert brought home a league title in the event. The hammer throw is scheduled for Saturday. Gretz will compete in both the discus and shot put after winning both events at the Horizon League Championships. While he is utilizing his automatic berth in the discus, he has reached the qualifying standard in the shot put, doing so at the Loras Open. Both throwing events will have their prelims and finals on Friday Majors reached his qualifying mark in the 800m at the Billy Hayes Invitational a week prior to winning the league 800m crown. Like the women's 100m and 200m, the prelims of the men's 800m will be run on Friday, with the finals on Saturday. Last season, UWM sent just one athlete to the NCAA Mideast Regional, as Horizon League Outdoor Athlete of the Year Nick Davis competed in the high jump. Athletes are competing at the regionals in hopes of advancing to the NCAA Championships, June 8-11, in Sacramento, Calif.
