Nine Named To Indoor Track and Field League All-Academic Team

Four female and five male athletes gain academic award

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Track and Field program has had nine athletes named to the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team. The league announced on Monday (5/10) that Anna Christian, Amber Perri, Katie Seep, Katie Slamka, Nick Bruskewitz, Sean Cludy, Bryan Hassemer, Adam Hobler and Josh Nygren have all been named to this year's team.

Christian, a distance runner from Horicon, achieved a grade point average of 3.635 while majoring in architecture. The junior claimed a first-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the Chicago Invite (1/24) in a time of 18:18.70. Christian claimed two sixth-place finishes at this year's indoor Horizon League championships (2/28) with one coming in the 3,000-meter run and the other coming in the 5,000-meter run.

Perri, an education major, boasts a grade point average of 3.953. The sophomore sprinter finished third in the 400-meter run at the Pepsi Challenge (2/14) and added a sixth-place finish in the 400 at the Northern Iowa Classic (2/7). The Verona native was 10th at the indoor league championships in the 400.

Seep, a senior from Reedsburg, holds a grade point average of 3.498 while majoring in secondary education and is making her second consecutive appearance on the league's all-academic team. Seep claimed a second-place finish in the 1,000-meter run at the Carthage Invite (1/31) while adding another second-place finish in the 800-meter run at the indoor league championships. The distance runner was also a part of Milwaukee's championship 3200-meter relay team at the Kansas Relays (4/17).

Slamka, a kinesiology major, owns a grade point average of 3.797. The sophomore from Racine has made a name for herself as one of the top hurdlers in the Horizon League. Slamka was named the league's athlete of the week (1/21) during the season and placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at the Kansas Relays. The second-year Panther just recently won the league's 400-meter hurdle championship after setting a new league record with her time of 1:01.81.

Bruskewitz, a junior from Madison, currently carries a grade point average of 3.312 while majoring in photography. A mid-distance runner, Bruskewitz set a meet record in the 1,000-meter run at the Carthage Invite, completing the event in a time of 2:32.65. He later added a second-place finish in the 800-meter run at the Northern Iowa Classic. Bruskewitz also placed seventh in the 1,000 at the league's indoor championships and is making his second consecutive appearance on the league's all-academic team.

Cludy, a marketing major, sports a grade point average of 3.385. The sophomore jumper placed second in the triple jump at the Division I Invite (1/17) and finished third in the triple jump at the Chicago Invite before later adding a second-place finish in the triple jump at the indoor league championships, leaping a distance of 46' 11.5".

Hassemer, a junior from Francis Creek, holds a grade point average of 3.449 while majoring in architecture. Hassemer placed sixth in the mile at the UWM Tune Up (2/21). The distance runner added a 10th-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the league championships, completing the event in a time of 15:05.11. Hassemer is also making his second consecutive appearance on the all-academic team.

Hobler, majoring in finance and marketing, boasts a grade point average of 3.724 and repeats as a Horizon League All-Academic team member. The senior sprinter recently broke his own 400-meter school record by scoring a time of 48.15 at the Horizon League Outdoor Championships (5/7). Injured most of the indoor season, the Milwaukee native returned to place second in the 400 at the indoor league championships.

Nygren rounds out the group of Milwaukee track and field student-athletes named to the league's all-academic team. The sophomore from Marinette has a grade point average of 3.826 while majoring in political science. Nygren placed first in the 5,000-meter run at the Chicago Invite and later added a second-place finish in the 5,000 at the outdoor league championships, finishing with a time of 14:58.69.

As individual teams, the women have a team grade point average of 3.078 while recording a 3.104 last semester. The men's program holds a team grade point average of 2.79, recording a 3.058 last semester. The men also scored the highest team grade point average of any UWM men's athletic program.

On the track, the men are the current Horizon League indoor and outdoor champions while the women finished second in both championship meets.
