Junior won league heptathlon championship last weekend

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (May 6, 2008) - Junior Kory Olson of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team was named the Horizon League Athlete of the Week for May 5, the league office announced today.

Olson is the third Panther to earn the award during the outdoor season, following juniors Holly Nearman April 1 and Jenni Saarinen April 15.

Olson got the championship portion of the season started for Milwaukee, winning the heptathlon crown at the Horizon League Multi-Event Championships last weekend in Indianapolis, Ind. She scored 4,457 points to top the event by 459 points over second place. She was aided by a personal-best throw of 127-7 in the javelin, which put her second in school history in the event.

Milwaukee enters the Horizon League Championships this weekend with a 19-6 lead over Youngstown State and Detroit after scoring three athletes in the heptathlon. Sophomore Emily Budde earned all-league second-team honors as runner-up to Olson and freshman Stacey Trzcinski took sixth. The Panthers will be going for a second-straight league outdoor championship when the meet gets underway officially on Thursday. It runs through Friday.
