In its final tune up for the Horizon League Outdoor Championships, May 13-14, in Indianapolis, Ind., the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team heads west to the Wisconsin Twilight Saturday (May 7) in Madison, Wis. The meet is UWM's only meet in the state of Wisconsin this outdoor season.
Last Time Out
Milwaukee broke a school record in the sprint medley relay and posted strong times in the 10,000m at the Drake Relays, last weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. In the sprint medley, juniors Iris Perez, Griffin McNulty and Tenia Fisher teamed with sophomore Timeka Walker to post a time of 4:03.91, good enough for 14th place. The quartet broke the school mark of 4:04.16 set at this same meet in 2003. Fisher was also on that relay, joined by current teammates, senior Sara Vanderloop and junior Katie Anderson.
Saving Time
Last weekend, UWM's long distance duo of senior Angie Christian and freshman Angie Huebner posted strong times in the 10,000m of the Drake Relays. Christian placed ninth and just missed her personal record in the event by 10 seconds. Huebner was more successful in setting a new personal standard, finishing 12th in a time of 37:38.32. Her time shattered her PR by almost 36 seconds and solidified her place on UWM's all-time list at No. 9. Christian currently ranks fourth.
League Honors
Last week, junior Katie Slamka became the second Panther this outdoor season to be honored as the Horizon League Track and Field Athlete of the Week. In the preceding week, Slamka had won the 400m hurdles and taken second in the 100m hurdles at the Central Collegiate Championships. The Racine native joined junior Stephanie Ray in earning the award during the outdoor season, while junior Tenia Fisher earned the honor twice for Milwaukee indoors.
Under The Bar
At the Pacesetter Invite (April 16), sophomore Timeka Walker became the first Panther woman since 1984 to crack the 12-second mark in the 100m. Since then, she has done it at three-straight meets, clocking in at 11.95 in the event last weekend at the Drake Relays. Walker sits third in school history in the event, behind Gloria Gregory and Kim Robertson who established their first and second-fastest times, respectively, in 1984, before Walker was born.
