UWM Women Set For Central Collegiate Championships

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team returns to action Saturday (April 23) at the Central Collegiate Championships in Champaign, Ill. Hosted by the University of Illinois, the meet will draw Marquette, Loyola, DePaul, Notre Dame and more teams from the region.

Last Time Out
UWM benefited from a win by junior Griffin McNulty in the 800m and a pair of top-three finishes by sophomore Timeka Walker (100m, 200m) to take fifth at the Pacesetter Invitational last weekend in Terre Haute, Ind. The Panthers finished with 73 points, while Purdue took top honors with 212.50.

At the Sea Ray Relays, juniors Katie Slamka and Tenia Fisher posted solid times in representing Milwaukee. Slamka competed in the 400m hurdles and took 27th in the event with a time of 1:03.45. In the 800m, Fisher posted a respectable time of 2:15.36 in taking 32nd in the event.

It's Been Awhile
Timeka Walker posted some times last weekend that have not been seen at UWM in quite some time. She posted top-three finishes in both the 100m and 200m, including a second-place finish in the 100m with a time of 11.90. She also ran a time of 24.60 in the 200m to take third. Her 100m time was the fastest by a Panther since 1984, while no one has run the 200m faster since 1985. Gloria Gregory and Kim Robertson are first and second all-time in each event, while Walker sits third.

Welcome To The Club
Griffin McNulty continues to establish herself as one of the top 800m runners in the league. First, she topped the preliminary field at the indoor league meet, while last weekend she ran the second-fastest time in the league when she won the event at the Pacesetter Invite. Her time of 2:13.48 was a personal best by over two seconds and put her third in school history. Together with Tenia Fisher, Milwaukee has a formidable one-two punch in the event. Fisher is second in school history and has won two league 800m championships.

Leading The League
A handful of Panthers are posting league-leading marks so far this season. Leading the way is Timeka Walker in the 100m, while the Milwaukee native is also just 0.04 seconds off the lead time in the 200m. Katie Slamka paces the league in the 400m hurdles, while junior Stephanie Ray and freshman Joy VanLaanen are one and two in the pole vault by a foot over third. Lastly, UWM has posted the fastest times in the 4x100m, 4x400m and 4x800m relays.

The Panthers are in action next at the Drake Relays April 28-30 in Des Moines, Iowa. It is the sixth-straight weekend of action for Milwaukee in its non-stop outdoor season.
