Panthers Are Knoxville-Bound For Sea Ray Relays
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (April 10, 2008) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team is in action again this weekend, heading to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Sea Ray Relays. Hosted by the University of Tennessee, the meet actually kicks off Thursday with the start of multi-events and runs through Saturday. Milwaukee has had strong showings at each of its first two meets of the season, including at both the Big Blue Classic and Stanford Invitational last weekend. At the BBC, sophomore Erin Havener broke the school pole vault record and junior Holly Nearman led a trio of Panthers at the Stanford Invite. Havener cleared 12-1 ½ to eclipse Lynda Thiel's school record of 12-0 ½. Junior Jes Weyandt also had a PR in the event, eclipsing 11-7 ¾ for sole possession of fourth in school history. Sophomore Emily Budde and juniors Jenni Saarinen and Beth Zimmerman also won events at the meet, with Budde topping the field in the heptathlon. Meanwhile, Saarinen and Zimmerman each leapt 18-3 ¼ in tying for first in the long jump. In California, Nearman ran a time of 17:06.61 to win her section and shave almost 25 seconds off her personal best. Her performance at the meet, coupled with her success in the classroom, earned her U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors for this week.
Last week, she was named the League Athlete of the Week after a strong opening weekend at the Spring Classic. At that meet, Nearman ran 4:40.95 for a top-10 time in school history and second on the day. She also used the 800m to get a workout in, running a heat by herself. She wound up taking fourth with a strong time of 2:19.66. After the Sea Ray Relays, the Panthers continue their outdoor season at the Dave Rankin Invitational, April 18, in West Lafayette, Ind. |
