Weekly Release in PDF Format
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (April 5, 2006) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team will remain in Milwaukee County this weekend to compete for the first time in almost four years, heading to the Wisconsin Lutheran Classic Saturday in Wauwatosa. The meet, hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran College, kicks off at 10 a.m.
Doing It All
Four Panthers will not be in attendance when the team travels to Wauwatosa, instead heading to the Big Blue Multi-Event in Charleston, Ill. Freshmen Jenni Saarinen, Kory Olson and Alicia Schneider and senior Jodi Hrdina will compete in the heptathlon at the two-day event, kicking off Thursday. Saarinen won a league title in the pentathlon during the indoor season, jumping into the school's all-time top-10 in three of the five events on her way to breaking the school record by 373 points (3,459).
Last Time Out
Senior Tenia Fisher broke the 19-year old school mark in the 800m in representing Milwaukee at the Stanford Invitational in California. Fisher finished seventh in the 800m, running a time of 2:08.97 to eclipse Anne Hill's time of 2:10.01 dating back to 1987. This was her first meet of the outdoor season and comes on the heels of an indoor slate where she set the 400m, 600m and 800m records.
The remainder of the team competed at the Mike Poehlein Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. Junior Taryn Cozine was once again the top Panther finisher, taking third in the 400m hurdles. Cozine improved on her personal-best time from the week prior, running 1:03.65 for third in the even. Freshman Jes Weyandt also tied for fifth in the pole vault with a height of 11-5 3/4, which is tied for third all-time.
She's At It Again
With Tenia Fisher breaking the school record in the 800m, she has now broken four records during her senior season. Indoors, she broke the 400m mark twice and both the 600m and 800m one time apiece. Her performance earned her a third-straight Horizon League Indoor Athlete of the Year honor, making her just the second athlete in league history to earn an athlete of the year award three times in the same sport.
It's Been Awhile
UWM is competing in the Milwaukee area this weekend for the first time since the 2002 season. While competing annually at the Wisconsin Twilight in Madison, the Wisconsin Lutheran Classic will be the Panthers' first meet in Greater Milwaukee since May 3, 2002, when they competed at the Marquette Invitational in Milwaukee.
Up Next
A handful of athletes will return to action at the Sea Ray Relays next weekend in Knoxville, Tenn. The meet is hosted by the University of Tennessee and runs April 14-15.
