VanLaanen Named Athlete Of The Week

Panther met NCAA Provisional with school-record pole vault

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Feb. 14, 2006) - Sophomore Joy VanLaanen of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team has been named the Horizon League Female Track & Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today.

The honor is the first of VanLaanen's career, while she is the second Panther to earn the award this season. Junior Timeka Walker was named Athlete of the Week Jan. 18.

At the Iowa State Cyclone Classic last weekend, VanLaanen crushed the school record in the pole vault, taking second in the event and equaling the NCAA Provisional height in the event. She posted a final height of 12-11 1/2 (3.95m) in the event, eclipsing the former school standard of 12-1 3/4. The height also surpassed her former personal best of 11-7 3/4 by nearly 16 inches.

Milwaukee hosts its only indoor meet of the season Friday, with the UWM Panther Tune Up. The meet gets underway at 4 p.m. at the Klotsche Center, and is the team's final meet before the Horizon League Championships, Feb. 25-26, in Kent, Ohio.
