COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior Lynda Thiel set a new UWM record in the pole vault to lead the Panther finishers on the first day of competition at the NCAA Mideast Regional Track and Field Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Thiel finished in a four-way tie for 11th place in the pole vault, clearing a school-record 12'0.5". Thiel also competed in the javelin on Friday, finishing 23rd overall. Thiel recorded a throw of 121'5" in her final competition. Stephanie Kenesie competed in the long jump, recording a longest effort of 5.62m (18'5.25") to finish eighth in her preliminary flight. Kristy Naef also competed in a pair of events on the day, finishing 33rd in the 100m hurdles in 15.05. In the 100m, she finished 19th, timed at 12.61 seconds. Nicole Frey ran in the 200m dash, finishing fourth in her heat in 25.88. Tenia Fisher finished sixth in her heat of the 400m dash, recording a time of 58.72. The women's 4x100m relay team of Naef, Sara Vanderloop, Iris Perez and Frey finished 16th in 47.07, defeating teams from Purdue and Kent State. In men's action, Nick Davis competed in the high jump, but failed to clear the opening height of 6'8". Only 19 athletes in the field of 39 cleared the opening height.
Competition concludes Saturday at the regional meet. Competing for the Panthers will be Michelle Fritsch in the triple jump, Thiel in the high jump, and the women's 4x400m relay team.
