Women's Track Wins Third-Straight TitleMay 9, 2003 INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team entered the 2003 Horizon League Championships as the favorite to pick up their third straight title and fourth overall. By the end of the day on Friday, they left little doubt that they were the top team to ever compete at the Horizon League Championships. Milwaukee scored a league-record 252 points, and also set a league record for margin of victory, more than tripling the points scored by runner-up Butler, who finished with 81 points. Coach Pete Corfeld was named women's Coach of the Year, the 19th time he has won the award. Kristy Naef led the way on Friday with a pair of victories, winning both the 100m dash and the 100m hurdles. Naef won the 100m in 12.15, while claiming victory in 14.50. She was also second in the 200m in 25.53. Naef also led off the winning 4x100m relay team, that included Sara Vanderloop, Iris Perez and Nicole Frey. The 4x100m team won in 48.72. Naef was also named the league's Outstanding Performer for Running Events. Lynda Thiel also added a pair of wins for Milwaukee, adding to her javelin title from Thursday. Thiel won the high jump, clearing 1.62m, and also took first in the pole vault, reaching 11-0. Her efforts earned her Outstanding Performer for Field Events for the second-straight year.
Tenia Fisher and Nicole Frey both added a win for the Panthers on the track on Friday. Fisher won the 400m in a meet-record time of 56.58, breaking her own meet record, set during Thursday's preliminaries. Fisher was also named the league's Outstanding Newcomer for Running Events. Frey, meanwhile, won the 200m in 25.02. In addition, the 4x400m relay team of Katie Seep, Teresa Braunreiter, Jill Naus and Fisher collected a win in 3:55.94. Michelle Fritsch, meanwhile, collected a win in the triple jump, measuring at 11.75m.
Also earning all-league honors with second-place finishes were Braunreiter in the 400m (58.42), Frey in the 100m (12.19), Katie Slamka in the 400m hurdles (1:03.25), Abby Hurst in the 5000m (18:42.70) and Stephanie Kenesie in the triple jump (11.55m). A host of other athletes scored points for Milwaukee on Friday. Christine Wampach was fourth and Katie Anderson fifth in the 1500m, with Wampach finishing in 4:47.15 and Anderson finishing in 4:50.18. Slamka was also third in the 100m hurdles in 15.08, with Fritsch fifth in 15.19 and Naus sixth in 15.23. In the 100m, Vanderloop was fourth in 12.37, Laura Diers fifth in 12.49 and Iris Perez sixth in 12.52. Vanderloop was also third in the 200m in 25.58. Seep added a sixth-place finish in the 400m in 58.98, while Anderson was fifth in the 800m in 2:20.53. In the 400m hurdles, Jodi Hrdina was fifth in 1:06.44, with Naus coming in sixth in 1:10.64. Stephanie Kenesie was third in the high jump, clearing 1.57m. In the pole vault, Stephanie Ray finished third, clearing 10-0, with Fritsch fourth after clearing 8-6 and Nikki Castona sixth after clearing 8-0. Kalin Konop was third in the triple jump, measuring 11.34m, with Allison Schnelle fourth after marking at 10.94m. Ray also took sixth in the triple jump, measuring 10.72m. The individual league champions will now compete in the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, which will be held on May 30 and 31, at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. |
