Zimmerman Wins League Long Jump Title On Championships First Day
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (May 8, 2008) - Junior Beth Zimmerman won a league title in the long jump to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team on the first day of the 2008 Horizon League Championships Thursday. Zimmerman gave Milwaukee its second league title, after junior Kory Olson's heptathlon crown last week, as the Panthers have 41 points at the halfway points of the league meet. Host Youngstown State currently has 49 to lead the way. Zimmerman led three UWM scorers in the long jump with her leap of 19-0 1/2. Sophomore Reigna Pierce was fourth with a jump of 18-6, while sophomore Emily Budde scored in sixth place with at 18-2 1/4. The Panthers also scored in the finals of the 10,000m and the discus throw on the meet's first day. Junior Danielle Magargee led a pair of Panther scorers in the 10,000m with a time of 38:05.41 putting her fifth. Senior Angie Huebner crossed the line alongside her in 38:05.93 for sixth. Sophomore Jamie Woods took fourth in the discus with a throw of 138-9. Milwaukee looks in good shape for the finals of many of the running events that will be held Friday. It qualified multiple runners in three events, including three in the 100m hurdles. Budde led the way in the hurdles with a time of 15.19 putting her third. Junior Jenni Saarinen took seventh in the prelims in 15.74 and Olson was eighth in 15.77.
Sophomore Kelsey Conrad topped the preliminary field in the 200m with a time of 24.78. She also took third in the 400m in 57.61. Freshman Angie Kaufmann qualified fifth in 58.39. In the 800m, sophomore Laura Ring ran a conservative time of 2:19.55 to qualify fifth, just ahead of senior Shannon Buttchen in sixth in 2:19.94. Zimmerman was UWM's lone qualifier in the 100, crossing he line in 12.59 for sixth. |
