Saarinen Sets School Heptathlon Record At Drake Relays
DES MOINES, Iowa (April 28, 2006) - Freshman Jenni Saarinen broke the school heptathlon record and fell just shy of an NCAA Provisional score, while senior Tenia Fisher took fourth in the 800m to highlight the beginning of the prestigious Drake Relays this week in Des Moines, Iowa. The heptathlon kicked the meet of Wednesday and concluded Thursday, with Saarinen tallying 4,993 points for eighth place. Her score just missed the provisional score of 5,000, while breaking Kristy Naef's 2001 school standard by 104 points (4,889). Fisher meanwhile, ran a time of 2:09.48 to place fourth in the 800m on Friday. Sophomore Angie Huebner shaved 26.18 seconds off her personal-best in the 10,000m on Thursday, finishing sixth in 36:44.33. Her time also moves her from fifth to fourth in school history in the event. Another notable time was senior Katie Slamka in the 400m hurdles. The two-time defending Horizon League Champion in the event, she crossed the line in 1:02.65 to finish 22nd. The Drake Relays conclude Saturday.
