Nearman Wins 5000m At Prestigious Kansas Relays
Sophomore Holly Nearman won the 5000m and sophomore Beth Zimmerman set a school record in the triple jump to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team during the first half of the prestigious Kansas Relays, this weekend in Lawrence. The meet concludes Saturday. Nearman ran a personal-best time of 17:31.43 in winning the 5k, while her time is also the fifth-best in school history. Senior Kourtney Nault was sixth in the event with a time of 18:01.54. "It went really well. Being able to work with three of my teammates in the same race really helped, especially in the middle," Nearman said of her performance. "(The conditions) were really nice. I'm from Wisconsin and we just got over 40 degree weather, so the weather has been a nice change." Zimmerman leapt 38-11 in placing 10th in the triple jump. She surpassed the school record of 38-6 ¾ held by Michelle Fritsch. Freshman Reigna Pierce was closed behind in 12th with what is now the third-best triple jump in school history, 38-3 ¼. Sophomore Jenni Saarinen got the meet started Wednesday in the heptathlon, placing second with a score of 4,970 points. She fell just 23 points shy of her own school record in the event, set last season. Other top-10 finishers in the early goings of the meet were junior Angie Huebner and freshman Laura Ring in the 800m. Huebner placed seventh in the 10,000m with a time of 38:01.15 and Ring ran a personal-best time of 2:17.49 in taking 10th.
