Panther Women Complete Day One At Sea Ray Relays
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (April 14, 2006) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team placed two runners in the top-10 of the 10,000m to highlight its first day of competition at the Sea Ray Relays, Friday in Knoxville. The meet, hosted by the University of Tennessee, concludes Saturday. Freshman Holly Nearman ran the 10th-fastest time in school history in the 10,000m in taking sixth. She crossed the line in 27:58.55, while junior Kourtney Nault was ninth in the event in 38:49.80. Another freshman, Beth Zimmerman, also improved her all-time standing, jumping 36-9 in the triple jump to improve from ninth to sixth on UWM's all-time top-10 in the event. Senior Tenia Fisher ran a personal-best time in the 400m and freshman Jenni Saarinen was the team's next-highest finisher in any event in the high jump. Fisher completed the distance in 56.04 for 24th, shaving 0.54 seconds off her best time, and Saarinen tied for 14th in the high jump with a height of 5-5. Also competing for Milwaukee on its first day was senior Katie Slamka in the 400m hurdles, junior Timeka Walker in the 100m and freshman Jes Weyandt in the pole vault. Slamka was 24th in her event with a time of 1:02.33, while Walker ran 12.02 in the 100m for 33rd. Weyandt cleared 10-0 to tie for 37th in the vault.
