Thiel Leads Panthers To Fifth Place Finish

Two school records fall over the weekend at Eastern Illinois

CHARLESTON, Ill. - Lynda Thiel and Stephanie Ray each claimed a school record as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team finished fifth out of nine teams at the Eastern Illinois Big Blue Invitational. The Panthers finished the meet with 97.5 points to finish fifth.

Thiel broke the school's javelin record by recording a winning throw of 40.63m, (133-3), breaking the old mark by .02m. The javelin is the second record in the two weeks of the outdoor season that Thiel has claimed. Ray, meanwhile, set the hammer throw record with a toss of 32.98m (108-2), shattering the old mark set at 26.34m (86-5) in 1999. Ray finished 21st in the event.

Abby Hurst took second place in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing in 11:46.04. Katie Anderson and Christine Wampach each posted a fourth-place showing, with Anderson fourth in the 1500m in 2:23.34 and Wampach fourth in the 10,000m in 39:16.59. Anderson also finished eighth in the 800m in 2:23.34.

Katie Slamka and Kristy Naef each picked up a third place finish in a hurdle event. Slamka claimed hers in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:06.47, while Naef's came in the 100m hurdles in 14.67. Jodi Hrdina also finished seventh in the 100m hurdles in 16.11.

Nicole Frey also placed in a pair of events, finishing sixth in the 100m in 12.47 and fourth in the 200m in 25.37. Sara Vanderloop was seventh in the 100m in 12.53 and eighth in the 200m in 25.75. Teresa Braunreiter finished seventh in the 400m in 59.39.

 

 

Thiel was second in the pole vault, clearing 3.35m (10-11.75), while Ray finished eighth in the same event after clearing 2.60m (8-6.25). Thiel was also fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.57m (5-1.75). In the long jump, Naef was eighth after jumping 5.10m (16-8.75), while Stephanie Kenesie was sixth and Kalin Konop was eighth in the triple jump. Kenesie measured at 10.70m (35-1.25), while Konop posted a mark of 10.63m (34-10.5).

The Panthers return to the track this weekend with a trip to Macomb, Ill., for the Western Illinois Lee Calhoun Invitiational on Saturday.
