Milwaukee's Nearman Wins 5000m Heat At Stanford Invitational
PALO ALTO, Calif. (April 4, 2008) - Junior Holly Nearman ran a personal-best time of 17:06.61 in the 5000m to win her heat and sophomore Laura Ring ran a time of 2:13.42 in the 800m to represent the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team at the Stanford Invitational Friday. The bulk of the Milwaukee squad was competing at the Big Blue Classic in Charleston, Ill. The Panthers claimed two event wins at the event to highlight the first day of action there. In topping her heat, Nearman shaved almost 25 seconds off her previous personal best time (17:31.43). She also moved up to fourth in school history in the event. Ring, running in the 800m for the first time in the outdoor season, eclipsed her previous best time by 0.33 seconds and placed fourth in her heat. She remains fourth in school history, while finishing 12th overall on the day. Sophomore Emily Budde won the heptathlon in Illinois, scoring 3,980 points. She overcame an 87-point deficit after Thursday's events with the field's best scores in the long jump and 800m. In fact, she ended up winning the event by 264 points over second place. Juniors Jenni Saarinen and Beth Zimmerman tied for top honors in the long jump, with each leaping 18-3 ¼. Sophomore Reigna Pierce was fourth in the event with a jump of 17-11 ¾, while sophomore Kory Olson was right behind her in fifth at 17-11. The Panthers also had a pair of top-five finishers in the 5000m. Senior Angie Huebner was second in 18:17.07, edging junior Danielle Magargee, who finished third in 18:17.18.
UWM continues action at both meets Saturday, with senior Erin Magargee competing in the 1500m at Stanford. The remainder of the team will finish up the Big Blue Classic at Eastern Illinois. |
