Women's Track & Field Opens Season At Spring Classic

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team opened its 2005 outdoor season at the Spring Classic in Carbondale, Ill., Saturday, taking seventh at the 10-team meet. The Panthers are four weeks removed from the end of the indoor season, and scored three top-five finishes on the day.

Freshman Angie Huebner was Milwaukee's top finisher, taking third in the 5000m. Coming off a successful indoor track season, Huebner completed the distance with a time of 17:41.91

The only Panther to score in two events, junior Katie Slamka posted a fourth-place showing in the 400m hurdles, while taking sixth in the long jump. In the 400m hurdles, she crossed the line in 1:05.78, while she yielded a jump of 17-8 3/4 in the long jump.

In the middle distance events, a pair of Panthers scored in the 1500m, while another received points in the 400m. Junior Griffin McNulty, the league's indoor champ in the 1000m, took fifth in the 1500m, while junior Katie Anderson was just a second behin in sixth with a time of 4:41.97. In the 400m, freshman Shannon Buttchen placed eighth with a time of 59.34.

McNulty and Buttchen also made up half of UWM's sixth-place 4x400m relay. The duo teamed with senior Teresa Braunreiter and junior Tenia Fisher to post a time of 4:08.61.

Milwaukee wastes no time in returning to action, as it will compete at the Purdue Invitational, April 1-2, in West Lafayette, Ind. The two-day event kicks off at 3 p.m. on Friday, while action will get underway on Saturday at 10 a.m.
