ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Feb. 27, 2010) - Seniors Jenni Parish and Beth Zimmerman won individual titles to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team to the top of the league standings after the first day of the 2010 Horizon League Indoor Championships Saturday.

Halfway through the meet, the Panthers have 77 points, handily ahead of second-place Wright State's 31 points. Butler is third with 29 and UIC is fourth with 13. Loyola and Detroit are tied for fifth with 12 points, Youngstown State is sixth with 10 and Valparaiso seventh with two.

The meet concludes Sunday. UWM is the defending league indoor champion, winning the event with 165 points, 45 points over second-place YSU.

Parish won her third league pentathlon championship with 3,695 points, just five points off her own school and league record. She cleared 5-5 3/4 in the high jump and ran 9.36 in the 60m hurdles to boost her score. UWM actually swept the top three places, with sophomore Shelby Schaal earning all-league second-team honors with 3,383 points. Senior Kory Olson was third with 3,232.

In the high jump, Milwaukee scored four athletes in the long jump behind Zimmerman's first-place finish. She cleared 18-7 1/4 for her first title in the event. Freshman Samia Taylor was fourth with a jump of 17-9. Olson was fifth at 17-8 3/4 and Schaal took sixth with a leap of 17-7 1/2.

The distance medley relay and freshman Sarah Finer in the pole vault also scored all-league second-team honors as runners-up in their events. The foursome ran a time of 12:34.62 in the relay.

Finer cleared her personal-best height of 11-7 3/4, the top height on the day, taking second based on attempts. Sophomore Courtney Fisher and freshman Chantel McConville each cleared 11-1 3/4, with Fisher taking third and McConville fourth on jumps.

Senior Jamie Woods broke her own school weight throw record for the third time this season and freshman Elise Sigg took fourth in the 5000m to round out the day one scorers. Woods threw 55-8 1/2 to take third in the throwing event, topping her record toss of 53-2 3/4. Sigg ran 17:48.83 in the 5000m.

Milwaukee also qualified a number of runners for the finals in the shorter track events. Senior Kelsey Conrad and sophomore Katie Duchow each qualified in both the 60m and 200m events. Freshmen Chia Okonkwo and Flo Mafany were two of four Panthers to qualify for the finals of the 60m hurdles. Olson and sophomore Calanetta Burrows also qualified.

In the 400m, Burrows and junior Angie Kaufmann will run in the finals Sunday and junior Tanaiya Fisher qualified for the finals of the 800m.
