Panther Women Win League Indoor Championship
(TEAM SCORES AND AWARD WINNERS LISTED BELOW) KENT, Ohio (Feb. 26, 2006) - Senior Tenia Fisher and junior Timeka Walker each won two events Sunday to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team to first place at the Horizon League Championships this weekend in Kent, Ohio. The Panthers finished with 172 points for their first league title since 2003 and fourth overall. Host Youngstown State finished second with 151, ahead of Loyola in third with 73.5 and UIC fourth with 56.5. Detroit with 47 points, Butler with 44 and Wright State with 11 rounded out the field. Head coach Pete Corfeld swept the men's and women's Coach of the Year honors for his 24th and 25th coaching awards. Fisher was also named Outstanding Running Performer, while freshman Jenni Saarinen netted the award for Field Newcomer of the Year. Fisher won both the 400m and 800m events, setting a school and league record in the 400m. Her time of 55.69 in the event topped the school mark of 56.13 she set earlier this season. In the 800m, she crossed the line in 2:15.17 for the win. She also ran with the league champion 4x400m relay, which ended the meet with a win. Junior Taryn Cozine, sophomore Shannon Buttchen and freshman LeaDrean Jordan joined Fisher in posting a time of 3:58.70. After sweeping the two sprint event at last year's outdoor meet, Walker won both the 60m and 200m events in record fashion. Her time of 7.63 in the 60m broke her own school mark by 0.01 seconds, while her 24.81 time in the 200m broke both the school and league standard she set Saturday in the prelims.
Saarinen followed up her first place finish in Saturday's pentathlon with a third-place showing in the high jump. She cleared 5-1 3/4, as did senior Katie Slamka, who placed fourth. Slamka also finished third in the 60m hurdles. Her time of 8.97 is the second-best in school history, missing the school mark by just 0.02 seconds. A trio of freshmen scored in the triple jump, led by Beth Zimmerman in second place. She cleared 36-11 3/4, the fourth-best distance in school history, while Kicha Cary placed fourth with a jump of 36-5 3/4, the sixth-best. Kory Olson took fifth, leaping 35-11 1/2. Sophomore Angie Huebner, who won the 5000m Saturday, placed third in the 3000m, while sophomore Erin Magargee took fifth in 10:22.66. Seniors Katie Anderson and Griffin McNulty posted similar finishes in the 1000m. Anderson was third with a time of 2:59.97, with McNulty coming in with a time of 3:06.02 for fifth.
