Threes Wild For Panther Women: Records, WinsFeb. 19, 2005 MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team set three school records in posting a perfect 3-0 mark at its annual UWM Panther Tune Up, Friday night at the Klotsche Center. The Panthers had decisive wins over league foes Illinois-Chicago (90-52) and Loyola (92-47) and edged crosstown rival Marquette (80-67). Leading the charge was junior Tenia Fisher, who broke a school record for the third-straight week. She ran 56.47 in the 400m to eclipse her own mark of 57.10, set Feb. 5, as well as the fieldhouse mark. Freshman Shannon Buttchen place fourth in the event in 59.10, while sophomore Amy Sunby also clocked in under a minute, taking sixth in 59.90. Fisher's high school teammate, sophomore Timeka Walker, also broke her own school record, finishing the 60m in 7.64 for second place. Sophomore Marcia Roundtree took fourth (7.96) in the event and junior Iris Perez placed fifth (7.99). Walker and Perez finished second and third for UWM in the 200m, with Walker crossing the line in 25.70, ahead of Perez in 26.07. Excitement abounded for Milwaukee in the pole vault, as junior Stephanie Ray reset the school and fieldhouse records with her winning final height of 12-1 3/4. Freshman Joy VanLaanen had tied the former mark of 11-7 3/4, which Ray set on Jan. 15, before Ray followed with her record-setting height. After placing fourth in the vault, VanLaanen headed to the long jump, where she won the event with a distance of 17-5 3/4 on only two jumps. Junior Katie Slamka had one of her three second-place finishes in the long jump, clearing 17-3, ahead of sophomore Taryn Cozine in third with a jump of 17-1.
Slamka also went second in the high jump, where she cleared 5-1 3/4, and the 60m hurdles, where she finished in 9.09. Slamka's hurdle time was the fourth-best in school history, while Cozine placed third in the event in 9.40. Junior Katie Anderson also picked up a win, as did the 4x400m relay. In the 1000m, the Eau Claire native crossed the line in 3:00.49 as the lone Panther in the event. The 4x400m relay had a time of 3:59.51 for the win. Taking second for Milwaukee was junior Griffin McNulty in the 800m and freshman Erin Magargee in the 3000m. McNulty ran the sixth-best time in team history of 2:16.58, while Magargee finished in 10:58.85 as runner up. UWM returns to action next weekend (Feb. 26-27) at the Horizon League Championships in Greencastle, Ind. The Panthers are looking to return to championship form after taking second at last year's indoor meet. Milwaukee had won three titles in four seasons prior to that. |
