Fisher Sets 400m Mark At Northern Iowa Classic

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Junior Tenia Fisher set a school record in the 400m and junior Katie Anderson won the mile run to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team at the Northern Iowa Classic Saturday in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Fisher already owns the 800m standard while it is the second Panther record to fall on the young 2005 season.

"I was a lot more pleased with the running events than I usually am at this meet," head coach Pete Corfeld said. "We had five runners under 60 seconds in the 400m which is good. (Both our men and women) also won the mile in the first running event of the day, which was a nice start."

Despite her record time of 57.10 in the 400m, Fisher took fourth place in the event, while freshman Shannon Buttchen took ninth in 59.94 and senior Teresa Braunreiter placed 10th in 58.96. Fisher's time eclipsed the former mark of 57.23, set by Shawn Burrow in 1999, and her previous personal record of 57.26 which had been second in school history.

"Our 400m was our best quality event (with our five runners under a minute)," Corfeld said. "Tenia was outstanding, and she definitely has a lot more in her to lower that time."

In the mile run, Anderson paced the field with her time of 5:05.43, a PR that ranks ninth in UWM's annals. Another mid-distance event featured junior Griffin McNulty taking fifth in the 800m, crossing the finish line in 2:18.30.

Making her collegiate debut, freshman Joy VanLaanen placed fourth in the long jump with her leap of 17-9 1/2. Another fourth-place finisher for Milwaukee was senior Anna Christian in the 3000m. She ran a time of 10:30.77, while sophomore Kourtney Nault placed sixth in 10:41.69.
