Zimmerman, Cary each break school record

MADISON, Wis. (Jan. 27, 2007) - Sophomores Beth Zimmerman and Kicha Cary each broke Zimmerman's school record in the triple jump and senior Timeka Walker won two events to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team at the Madison Elite Invitational Saturday in Madison, Wis.

The meet was non-scoring.

Zimmerman won the triple jump with a distance of 38-9 3/4, seven inches better than the school mark she set last weekend. Cary was second, just one inch back, with a jump of 38-8 3/4, also eclipsing the former mark. Her jump was also 1-8 1/2 inches better than her personal best. Freshman Reigna Pierce also got in the act, jumping to sixth in school history with her leap of 37-1 to take fifth in the event.

Walker won both the 60m and 200m events, running a time of 7.69 in the 60m. In the 200m, she crossed the line in 25.60. Sophomore Holly Nearman was UWM's fourth event winner, topping the field in the 5000m with her time of 18:09.42. Senior Kourtney Nault took second in 18:10.91 and junior Angie Huebner was fourth in 18:51.00.

Sophomore Jenni Saarinen moved up in the school's annals in both the high jump and 60m hurdles on the day. In the high jump, she missed the school record in by just 3/4 of an inch with her final height of 5-6 1/2. The height is third in school history. She also ran a time of 9.22 in the 60m hurdlesto move to eighth all-time in the event. The Finland native took fourth in both events on the day.

Senior Taryn Cozine added a fourth-place finish in the 600m and freshman Erin Havener tied for fifth in the pole vault. Cozine ran a time of 1:40.27 and Havener cleared 11-5 3/4.

 

 

Milwaukee has a week off before returning to action Feb. 9-10 at the Iowa State Cyclone Classic in Ames, Iowa.
