Fisher Tops 600m At Central Collegiate ChampionshipsJan. 22, 2005
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Junior Tenia Fisher won the 600m to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field on the second day of the Central Collegiate Championships, Saturday in Champaign, Ill. For the meet, the Panthers tallied 31.33 points to take sixth, while the host University of Illinois scored 223 for the win. "We were able to build on some things from last week, and we know what we need to do for our next meet," head coach Pete Corfeld said. "Yesterday was a bit of a struggle, but we were able to bounce back and do better today." A week after winning the 800m at the Division I Invitational, Fisher topped the field in the 600m with a time of 1:34.37. Her time ranks second all-time at UWM, just 0.48 seconds off the school standard. She was not the only Panther to fare well in the middle distance events, as juniors Griffin McNulty and Katie Anderson scored in the 800m. McNulty finished fourth in 2:19.32, while Anderson was sixth in 2:22.55. "Tenia (Fisher) really attacked it," Corfeld said. "She struggled at the start, but fought back to get the win. It just shows how good she is. She's the real deal." Freshman Shannon Buttchen continued a steady start to her collegiate career, taking sixth in the 400m and running with the fifth-place 4x400m relay. After posting a time of 1:00.07 in the 400m, she teamd with Anderson, McNulty and sophomore Taryn Cozine to complete the relay in 4:02.94. Milwaukee also scored points in the long jump, where junior Katie Slamka tied for sixth place with a leap of 16-1. UWM takes a week off berfore returning to action at the Northern Iowa Invitational, Feb. 5, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
