Panthers claim three meet and fieldhouse records Saturday

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team claimed three meet and fieldhouse records Saturday in finishing second at the Carthage College Division I Invitational in Kenosha, Wis. The Panthers totalled 165 points to finish behing Marquette's 186.

Lynda Thiel and Stephanie Kenesie each claimed a first-place finish and meet and fieldhouse record, with Thiel's coming in the pole vault and Kenesie's coming in the long jump. Thiel cleared 10-6, breaking the old meet record of 9' and the fieldhouse mark of 10-5.5. Kenesie, meanwhile, jumped 18-10.75, smashing the old meet mark of 17-0.5 and the fieldhouse record of 17-11.75.

The Panthers also set a meet and fieldhouse record in the 4x200m relay, with the team of Sara Vanderloop, Laura Diers, Iris Perez and Nicole Frey finishing in 1:44.35. That time bested the old meet mark of 1:47.60 and the fieldhouse record of 1:45.78.

But the meet wasn't just about breaking records. Numerous Panthers started the 2003 season with a strong showing. Thiel added another first-place mark in the high jump, clearing 5-3.75, while Kenesie also tallied her second first-place mark in the triple jump with an effort of 36-1.25.

In other field events, Kenesie added a fourth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 5-1.75, while Allison Schnelle finished seventh with a height of 4-9.75. Nikki Castona cleared 8-6 to finish third in the pole vault, followed by Michelle Fritsch in fourth with a height of 7-11.5. Fritsch also added a second-place finish in the long jump, jumping 17-2. She was followed by Kristy Naef in fourth place with an effort of 17-0.75 and Kalin Konop in sixth with a jump of 16-5.25. Konop also was third in the triple jump with a mark of 35-1.25, with freshman Stephanie Ray coming in fourth after a mark of 34-8.5. Ray would also finish seventh in the women's 20 lb. weight throw with an effort of 37-1.75.

 

 

The Panther runners also had a strong day, with UWM having at least one runner place at each distance from 55m up to the mile. In the 55m dash, Naef, Vanderloop and Diers finished fourth through sixth, with led by Naef's 7.42. Vanderloop finished in 7.49, while Diers came across in 7.50. In the 200m, Frey finished third in 26.17, followed by Vanderloop in fourth in 26.58 and Perez in sixth in 26.80. Tenia Fisher took fifth in the 400m in 1:00.36, with Amber Perri finishing seventh in 1:00.66. In the 800m, Abby Hurst was seventh in 2:23.64, while Christine Wampach and Katie Anderson were fourth and seventh in the mile. Wampach's time was 5:03.75, while Anderson finished in 5:19.69.

In the 55m hurdles, freshman Katie Slamka led the way, finishing third in 8.70. Kenesie was fifth in 8.72, with Jill Naus finishing sixth in 8.93.

The Panthers also claimed a first-place finish in the distance medley relay, finishing in 12:52.06, and a second-place mark in the 4x400m relay, finishing in 4:00.63.

Milwaukee returns to action Saturday when the Panthers travel to Charleston, Ill., for the Eastern Illinois Invitational.
