Halcomb Earns Second League Honor

Freshman named Player of the Week for performance at ITA Midwest Regional

Oct. 29, 2002

MILWAUKEE - After going nearly two and a half years without a Horizon League Player of the Week winner, freshman Alyssa Halcomb has accomplished the feat twice in her first semester of competition. Halcomb was named the Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 27, the league office announced today.

Last week at the ITA/Omni Hotels Midwest Regional at Michigan State, Halcomb won her first-round match in the singles qualifying bracket over Cleveland State's Paulina Reyes, 6-2, 6-1. Halcomb then fell to Purdue's Brittany Seitz in the second round, but ended up the only Horizon League player to win a match in singles play at the regional on the weekend.

Halcomb, who now stands at 4-5 on the season in singles play, won the award earlier this month after leading the Panthers to a 7-0 victory over Missouri-Kansas City, ending UWM's 28-match losing streak. The 7-0 win was also the first shutout of coach Erin Jex's career at Milwaukee.

The Panthers have concluded competition for the fall semester, and will resume play on Feb. 1, 2003, when they travel to Chicago to face league-rival UIC.
