The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team wraps up its fall season as two players travel to the ITA Regionals in Kalamazoo, Mich.

* The Event

The 2003 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Championships are one of eight regional tournaments throughout the country that take place in late October. Western Michigan University in Kalamzoo is hosting the event for the first time ever. The event includes nearly 200 student-athletes and runs Thursday-Sunday.

* UWM In The Event

UWM is sending one singles player and one doubles team to the event. Tammie Spiel will compete in the singles event and will team with Shayna Illingworth in the doubles event. Singles play begins at 9 a.m. Thursday with doubles play beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday.

* Sidelined By Injury

UWM's top singles player, Margie Van Lieshout, will miss the ITA Regionals due to a nagging knee injury.

* Coaches Corner On The Event

"Tammie has been playing some tough singles throughout this season and it will be a good opportunity for her. She will also step in at doubles because of an injury and should make a competitive team with Shayna."

* Recapping The Last Time Out

The Panthers found some success at the Ball State Invitational almost three weeks ago. Tammie Spiel won two matches in Flight A singles while Erin Felber also claimed two wins. Kristen Bauknecht and Shayna Illingworth each won a single match while the doubles team of Megan Brown and Melissa Hackett won twice and the team of Felber and Bauknecht won once. There was no team score kept at the event, which included Ball State, IPFW, IUPUI and Butler.

* Oh So Close

Three matches in the dual with Whitewater Sept. 24 turned into heartbreaking losses for a Panther team in search of a crucial fifth point that would have meant victory. Shayna Illingworth had to pull out of her singles match due to illness after losing the first set, 7-6. Megan Brown fell at number-four singles, 7-6, 7-5. And, in doubles play, the team of Tammie Spiel and Cassie Kuranz fell, 8-6.

* Adding To The Schedule

UWM has added another match to its spring schedule. The Panthers' spring trip to California will now start with a March 20 match with Southern Utah. UWM also plays UC-Riverside and Cal-State Fullerton on its trip. Earlier, the Panthers added two other matches - a March 12 date at Ball State and a March 13 contest with IUPUI.

* Up Next

UWM doesn't play again until opening the spring season Feb. 12 at UW-Green Bay.
