Halcomb Named Player of the Week

Freshman earns team's first league honor since 2000

Oct. 15, 2002

MILWAUKEE - Freshman Alyssa Halcomb was named Horizon League Player of the Week for her performance in helping the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team snap a 28-match losing streak Saturday against Missouri-Kansas City, the league office announced today.

Halcomb defeated UMKC's Yelena Podorozhansky in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to lead the Panthers to a 7-0 sweep of the Kangaroos. The win was her first career win at No. 1 singles, and raised her overall mark to 3-2 on the young season.

Halcomb is the first Panther to receive the league's weekly honor since Kristine Miller won the award on April 27, 2000, after winning two singles and two doubles matches against Oakland and Cleveland State.

The Panthers (1-1) will return to the courts Saturday when they travel to Indianapolis for a pair of non-league matches. UWM will face IUPUI at 9 a.m. before meeting the University of Indianapolis at 2 p.m.
