Tennis Gears Up For Final Fall MatchesOct. 15, 2001 MILWAUKEE - The UWM tennis team will finish up fall play this weekend with a pair of matches against Wright State and Western Illinois. The Panthers will host the Westerwinds on Friday at 4 p.m. before taking on the Raiders in a Horizon League match on Saturday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held at Nicolet High School in Glendale. Last Week: The Panthers dropped their first dual match of the 2001-02 season on Saturday to IUPU-Indianapolis, 7-0. The Jaguars did not lose a set on their way to victory over UWM. UWM was also to have played a dual match with UW-Green Bay on Saturday. That match was postponed due to the weather. No makeup date has yet been announced. Scouting the Westerwinds: Western Illinois lost a match to Truman State on Sunday by a 5-2 margin. WIU picked up their two wins in first and third singles. Sisters Kate and Emmy Cilek picked up the wins for the Westerwinds, with Kate Cilek's win in No. 1 singles coming in three sets. All four of WIU's singles losses came in straight sets. Scouting the Raiders: Wright State returns eight players from the team that finished third in the Horizon League last year. The Raiders are led by senior Gloria Montero, who holds a record of 6-2 as of Oct. 10. Youth is Served: The Panthers continue to be led by head coach Erin Grambow's first recruiting class. Freshman Megan Brown (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) continues to hold the top record on the team at 4-3. Brown lost her match in No. 4 Singles against IUPUI. Fellow freshman Erin Felber (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) is the only other Panther with a record above .500. Felber is 2-1 on the season and did not play against the Jaguars. The third member of Grambow's recruiting class, freshman Tammie Spiel (Milwaukee, Wis./Muskego) lost in her match at No. 1 Singles over the weekend against IUPUI. With the loss, her record fell to 1-5 on the season. The fourth and final member of the team's newcomers, freshman Melissa Hackett (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) saw her first action of the year against the Jaguars, teaming up with senior Julie Heling (Menasha, Wis./St. Mary Central) in No. 3 doubles. Is This Home?: Last year, the Panthers played only three home matches, going 1-2. UWM defeated Cleveland State on Sept. 30, 2000, but fell to Marquette and to UW-Green Bay later in the season. This season, the Panthers will play eight home matches, including matches against league opponents Detroit, Butler and Wright State. This Is Where It Ends: The two matches this weekend will conclude play for the fall. The Panthers will resume play on Feb. 24, 2002, when they host Northern Illinois. A site and a time for the match has yet to be determined.
The spring season will conclude with the Horizon League Championships in Indianapolis on April 26-28, 2002.
