Tennis Set To Begin Dual MatchesOct. 8, 2001 MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's tennis team has finished the tournament portion of the fall schedule and will begin dual-match play this weekend. The Panthers will take on IUPU-Indianapolis and UW-Green Bay on Saturday in Green Bay. The Panthers will face the Jaguars on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and take on the Phoenix later that afternoon. The Season Thus Far: The Panthers have participated in two early fall tournaments, one at Eastern Illinois and the other at Northern Illinois. Neither tournament was scored as team, but Milwaukee was able to get some idea of what to expect this year. UWM has gotten strong production from a trio of newcomers. Megan Brown (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) holds the team's top record at 4-2 after going 2-1 in each of the season's tournaments. Another freshman, Erin Felber (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) has put together a record of 2-1 on the young season. Felber did not compete for the Panthers at Northern Illinois. Freshman Tammie Spiel (Milwaukee, Wis./Muskego) and sophomore Cassie Kuranz (Racine, Wis./Case) have the only other victories for UWM on the young season. Spiel is 1-4, her one victory coming at Northern Illinois. Kuranz is 1-5 on the year, winning a match at Eastern Illinois. Youth is Served: Head coach Erin Grambow's first recruiting class has already begun to pay dividends. Combined, the three freshmen have a record of 7-7, a strong mark given the level of play they have faced in the early going. Double the Fun: The Panthers have had some success in doubles play. The doubles team of junior Molly Caulk (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and senior Kate Laveck has a 1-1 record on the year, after going winless as a team a year ago. The two freshmen, Tammie Spiel and Megan Brown, have also combined for a 1-1 record this year.
Up Next: The Panthers will host their only two home matches of the fall season next weekend. UWM will entertain Western Illinois on Oct. 19 and play host to Horizon League foe Wright State on Oct. 20. Both matches will be played at Nicolet High School in Glendale.
