Tennis Wraps Up Fall Tournaments

Team next travels to Green Bay for two dual matches

Oct. 1, 2001

MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's tennis team finished the fall tournament season Sunday at the Northern Illinois Invitational in DeKalb, Ill.

The Panthers had good showings from several new faces in the tournament, as freshman Megan Brown (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) notched two victories on Saturday. Brown defeated Jessica Patterson of Bradley University in two sets, 6-4, 7-5. She later defeated Victoria Robertson, also of Bradley, 6-3, 6-1. Brown was defeated in her third match of the tournament, losing to Tanja Sukovic from Northern Illinois, 6-0, 6-2.

Another freshman, Tammie Spiel (Milwaukee, Wis./Muskego) had UWM's only other win, as she defeated Bradley's Kelley Wood in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 10-8.

The Panthers were swept in doubles play on the weekend. Sophomore Cassie Kuranz (Racine, Wis./Case) and senior Shauna Jansen (Uninon Grove, Wis./Union Grove) came the closest to victory, falling 8-6 to Kelley Wood and Megan Fong of Bradley.

Freshmen Leading the Way: Coach Erin Grambow's team has been led by three members of her first recruiting class. Megan Brown, Tammie Spiel and Erin Felber (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) have all accumulated the top records early in the 2001-02 season. Brown leads the team with a 4-2 mark, having gone 2-1 in both of the early season tournaments. Felber's mark of 2-1 came in the Eastern Illinois Tournament, and she did not play at Northern Illinois. Spiel notched the first win of her collegiate career Sunday at Northern Illinois.

The only other Panther victory on the season belongs to sophomore Cassie Kuranz, who went 1-2 at the Eastern Illinois Tournament.

Back in Action: The Panthers will next return to the courts on Sat., Oct. 13, in Green Bay, Wis. UWM will play a pair of dual matches, the first against IUPU-Indianapolis at 9 a.m., and the second against UW-Green Bay at 1 p.m.
