Sept. 25, 2002 MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team has a week off before returning to the courts on Oct. 4 and 5 at the Ball State Invitiatonal in Muncie, Ind. The Panthers (0-1) will look to build confidence at the invitational to help prepare for the coming season.
Almost There
Milwaukee came close to ending a 27-match losing streak over the past weekend, falling to UW-Whitewater 5-2 in Whitewater, Wis. Two of UWM's defeats came in three sets after winning the first set. The Panthers also lost the doubles point after getting blanked in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Off and Running
The two newcomers to this year's team both had impressive debuts Saturday at Whitewater, collecting both of the team's wins. At No. 2 singles, Alyssa Halcomb collected her first collegiate win, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, while Margie Van Lieshout also picked up career win number one at No. 4 singles, winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
Tough-Luck Teammates
Molly Caulk and Tammie Spiel have been two of the unluckiest players when it comes to collegiate tennis. Caulk won just a single match a year ago and lost at Whitewater, while Spiel could only collect three in her first year of play. The two teamed up for doubles play 17 times last season but failed to collect a win.
Caulk Climbs the Lists
With match against Whitewater, senior Molly Caulk has moved into fourth place all-time in career matches played with 73. She ended last season with 72, tied with Lori Rocklewitz, who played from 1993-97, and Tori Whitlinger, who played from 1994-98.
Spring Break in Sunny Milwaukee
For the first time since the 1998-99 season, and the first time since coach Erin Grambow took over the UWM tennis program, the Panthers will not be taking a training trip during Spring Break. Last year, UWM traveled to Texas for matches against Texas-Pan American, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and St. Mary's of Texas. The Panthers went 0-3 on last year's trip. Since moving to Division I in 1990, the Panthers are 9-17 all-time on Spring Break trips.
Up Next
After competing at Ball State, the Panthers will journey to Chicago for a neutral-site matchup with Missouri-Kansas City on Oct. 12.
