The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team continues its 2003 fall schedule by making a short trip to Whitewater, Wis., to battle the Warhawks. The dual meet begins at 10:30 a.m. * The Competition UW-Whitewater, an NCAA Division III team, is 2-1 in dual meets this year and finished second to UW-Eau Claire in the eight-team Warhawk Invitational two weeks ago. The Warhawks finished last year ranked 11th in the Central Region by the ITA. * Recapping Last Week The Panthers got their first taste of action in the 2003-04 season, facing stiff competition at the Gopher Invitational. While every Panther player lost their first match, the highlights included Cassie Kuranz and Tammie Spiel advancing to the consolation final in a doubles bracket. The event included Big 10 champion Minnesota and Horizon League champion UIC, along with other top competition from around the Midwest. * Coach's Corner On The Gopher Invitational "Things got better from day to day, but all-in-all we have to come out ready to play with the maximum amount of fight and effort," UWM head coach Erika Wentz said. "The doubles match that we won was the best doubles match of the day and just a great effort by our team. We pushed hard in some other matches and lost to some of the top players in the nation. We're showing some improvements and we're moving up step-by-step." * Adding To The Schedule UWM has added two more matches to its spring schedule. The Panthers will play at Ball State March 12 at 6 p.m. and at IUPUI March 13 at 3 p.m. * Getting Everyone Involved For the second week in a row, the entire Panther roster will get to play this weekend. Even though the usual dual meet format allows for six singles players and three doubles teams per school, both teams will play eight singles matches and four doubles matches this weekend. * Leading The Pack Sophomore Marjorie VanLieshout will again be at the top of the Panther lineup card this weekend. The sophomore from Oshkosh, Wis., will move up to number one singles after winning three matches in the number two slot last year. * Youth Serves Notice Freshman Shayna Illingworth has quickly made an impression during fall practice and will likely be at number-three singles this weekend at Whitewater. She played for four years at Mequon Homestead High School, helping the team to the state runner-up spot. She also played on a doubles team that finished fifth at the state tournament. Illingworth is also expected to again team with Marjorie Van Lieshout in the number-one doubles slot. * Saluting The Senior Cassie Kuranz is the lone senior on this year's roster. She is expected to play at number-six singles this weekend and had five wins last season, tied for second on the team. * Coaching Debut Last weekend marked the debut of new UWM coach Erika Wentz, who was hired this summer. Wentz, from suburban Brookfield, was a standout at the University of Texas-El Paso as a collegiate tennis player. * Up Next
UWM plays in the Ball State Invitational Oct. 3-4.
