UWM Opens Fall Schedule With Busy Weekend

Panthers play at Whitewater Thursday, then head to Peoria

Sept. 9, 2008

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team starts the fall portion of its 2008-09 schedule with a busy weekend of action.

The Panthers will be in Whitewater Thursday afternoon to take on the Warhawks in a dual match before heading to Peoria, Ill., for this weekend's Hotels at Grand Prairie Invitational.

UWM will open the season looking to build on back-to-back record-setting campaigns.

Last year, Milwaukee finished 14-12, setting a Division I school record for wins. Plus, UWM finished fifth in the Horizon League Tournament, equaling the second-best finish in school history. The Panthers have now won 27 dual matches over the last two seasons, more than the team had won in the last eight seasons combined.

Individually, junior Kelly Drvaric earned All-Horizon League honors for a second-straight season while sophomore Jenna Felsher set a school record with 23 singles victories. On top of that, junior Kari Kastenholz finished with 19 singles victories by winning 11 of her last 13 singles contests, while sophomore Sammi Schoen also had 19 singles wins. Junior Ashley Schoneman added 10 singles wins. The tandem of Drvaric and Kastenholz led the way on the doubles front, collecting 17 victories as a team.

This season, those five returning players will be joined by a pair of talented freshmen in Megan Gow and Karlee Miller. Gow was an all-state performer in both singles and doubles at St. Charles North High School in suburban Chicago while Miller was an all-state doubles player at Hartland Arrowhead.

Thursday's action at Whitewater starts at 4:30 p.m., while action in Peoria runs all day Friday through Sunday.

This weekend's play is the first of three tournaments the Panthers will participate in this fall. UWM is scheduled to take its entire team to the Ball State Invitational Sept. 26-27, while selected members of the team will participate in the ITA Regionals Oct. 23-26. UWM's full spring schedule starts Jan. 19 at Marquette.
