Women's Tennis Begins 2001 Season

Team travels to Eastern Illinois for first tournament

Sept. 6, 2001

MILWAUKEE (Sept. 6, 2001) - The UWM women's tennis team travels to Charleston, Ill., Sept. 7 through Sept. 9 for the Eastern Illinois tournament.

The Panthers, under the direction of second-year coach Erin Grambow, return five players from last year's team and welcome an additional five new faces.

Headlining the returners is junior Molly Caulk. Caulk was the No. 3 singles player a year ago for the Panthers and will be counted on to step up this year.

Also returning are a trio of seniors, Julie Heling, Shauna Jansen and Kate Laveck, and sophomore Cassie Kuranz.

The newcomers are led by Tammie Spiel, who was the second-ranked junior tennis player in the state, and Erin Felber, a member of the Nicolet H.S. state championship team. Also joining the Panthers will be fellow freshmen Megan Brown, Melissa Hackett and Megan Shemanske.

The Panthers will have to regroup with the loss of last year's top two players, Kaila Duff and Jamie Martin.

UWM opens the fall portion of the schedule at three team tournaments before beginning dual-match play in October. The Panthers will be looking to fine-tune the roster before the conference portion of the schedule begins.

"With so many newcomers, it's hard to say how everything's going to fall into place," coach Erin Grambow said. "It's going to take us a while to see what works."
