Panthers Head To League ChampionshipsApril 25, 2002 MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's tennis team will head to Indianapolis this weekend to compete in the Horizon League Championships. The Panthers will open up the tournament on Saturday with reigning league champion and top-seeded UIC at 9 a.m. Against UIC: The Panthers faced UIC on March 30 at Pleasant Valley Tennis Club in Jackson, Wis., with the Flames taking a 7-0 victory. The Panthers lost all singles matches in straight sets and all three doubles matches by an 8-0 count. A Worthy Opponent: UIC has long been a power in the Horizon League. The Flames have won the last five league titles in women's tennis, and return the league's reigning player of the year, Nicole Derouin. Tournament History: The Panthers have struggled in the league tournament over the past few years. UWM has finished seventh out of seven teams the past three years. The highest finish UWM has ever had in the league tournament was a fourth-place finish in 1998. Tournament Bracket: If the Panthers win their first match against UIC, they would play the winner of Youngstown State and UW-Green Bay. Should the Panthers lose the first match, they would play the loser of the match between the Penguins and Phoenix. Lucky Number Six: Megan Brown picked up a victory against Chicago State, giving her six on the season. Not only do the six wins give her the most wins on the team for the season, but she keeps a streak of six wins by a Panther freshman alive for the third consecutive year. Last year, Cassie Kuranz collected six wins, while Molly Caulk won nine in her first season two years ago.
Up Next: The UWM tennis season concludes with the Horizon League Championships. The Panthers will resume action in the fall season.
